Tony Worrell

December 29, 1965 — November 10, 2015

Tony Worrell, 49, died Tuesday, November 10th of 2015 unexpectedly.

Tony was born on December 29, 1965 to Roland and Ruth Worrell in Goldsboro, NC. He attended Goldsboro High School where he was known as “All Worrell”. He was scouted by I50 colleges out of high school.  He finally chose the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.

In his career at UNT he scored 1516 points and is ranked 8th in all time scorers.  In 1988 he led UNT to their first NCAA tournament, becoming the Southland Conference Player of the Year. In 2000 he was inducted into the UNT Athletic Hall of Fame.

Being the adventurous man he was, Tony took advantage of his opportunity to play professional basketball overseas.   During his 11 year professional career, he touched lives all over the world in Spain, Switzerland, Belgium, Holland, France and even Argentina.

Tony moved with his family to Grand Junction, Colorado in 2001.  He became highly involved in the community coaching youth basketball and officiating AAU, city league, middle and high school games.

Tony’s pride and joy was his daughter, Delaney.  He made sure his life revolved around her.  He was very proud of her accomplishments in music and the young lady that she has become.

Everyone who came into contact with Tony instantly realized what a caring person he was.  His smile so large would light up the room.  He was a great role model, a mentor to many, and a constant source of strength to others. He was always there ready to lend a hand or help strangers and friends alike, no questions asked.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roland Lee Worrell brothers, Roland Lee Worrell, Jr. and Donald R. Worrell, sister Kathyrn M. Oates and her husband Kenneth Oates, Sr.

He is survived by his love, Wendy Peden, his daughter Delaney and her mother Renee; mother Ruth M. Worrell; brother Leonard E Worrell; sisters, Chris Ann Worrell and Teresa W Smith (Andrew); aunt, Lillie M Harris (Walter); and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and numerous friends considered family in his heart.
