Michael Rice

December 15, 1933 — February 19, 2021

Michael McGuire (Mickey) Rice went home to Jesus on February 19, 2021 after a valiant fight against cancer.  Mickey was born in Cameo, Colorado on December 15, 1933 to Ruth and Elmer Rice.  In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by an infant daughter Kim Renee, brothers Jon, Frank, and Jerry, nephew Charlie, daughter-in-law Mary Ellen, and great-grandson Kaison.   He grew up in Clifton and Palisade Colorado, and graduated from Palisade High School in 1951.

After he attended Mesa State College, he joined the US Air Force Cadet Program in 1953.  He became a First Lieutenant, and was later promoted to Captain while serving in the Air National Guard until 1961. He was an accomplished pilot and loved flying.

He married the love of his life, June Coleman, on July 10, 1955.  They spent the first two years of their married life in Japan, where Mickey was stationed.

Upon his return to the Grand Valley in 1958, Mickey worked at LB Walker Electronics (later Wintronics), and  became the manager for 37 years.  He also put in all of the first television translator system for areas all across Colorado.  In addition to these careers he also farmed with his dad and brother.

Mickey also served on the East Orchard Mesa Fire department for over 30 years.  He was very involved by serving on numerous boards within the community.

After managing the store, Mickey continued full time farming with his sons. He loved Jesus, spending time with his family, joking around, flying, working with electronics, and farming.  He is known for many accomplishments, but most importantly he was an amazing husband, father, uncle, grandpa, and friend. He was a rock for the whole family.  He  will be missed deeply.  He is survived by June, his wife of 65  years, sons Doug, Rob, and Dave, daughter Debbie, 7 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, a brother Jim, a sister Amelia, and numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

A private interment will be held on Friday, February 26th at 1:00 p.m at Memorial Gardens Cemetery.  Many thanks to the team at HopeWest for all of their exceptional support and care. Donations can be made to  HopeWest.
