Kevin Schott

September 4, 1958 — March 30, 2021

Kevin Charles Schott was born September 4th, 1958 to Robert Charles Schott and Velda Kathleen (Jones) Schott in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Kevin was baptized at St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rolfe, Iowa in December of 1958.

At the age of 16, Kevin earned his Eagle Scout. This accomplishment is one Kevin was extremely proud of and he loved to tell his family and friends all about his Boy Scout days.

While in college, Kevin played multiple sports including basketball, football, and track. Throughout college, Kevin and his brother, Kirk, worked at the scout camp at Lake Alexander in Colorado. He always had fond memories and many stories from scout camp as well as the people he worked with. It was there that Kevin fell in love with the state of Colorado.

Kevin accepted his first teaching job at Burlington High School as a biology teacher in 1981. It was in Burlington that he met his wife Teresa. They attended the same church and were set up by a coworker of Kevin’s. They were married in Burlington, Co at First St. Paul’s Lutheran church on November 18, 1984.

In 1988, they welcomed their first daughter, Neelly into the world. Following her birth they moved from Burlington to Craig, Co where they welcomed their second daughter, Hilliary, in 1992. Kevin continued teaching science while attaining his administrators license. Kevin became an administrator in Hayden and Basalt prior to accepting a job at Grand Junction High School. Kevin was an assistant principal at GJHS before becoming the principal where he became a GJHS tiger for life. He loved this school, these kids and the community with all his heart.

Kevin “retired” from education, but never could give it up, with plans to continue his career in Alaska in 2018. These plans were delayed however, after he contracted an infection in his foot. He battled this infection in his foot for two years, and it left him in the hospital for over 100 days straight. During this time, he had his leg amputated from the knee down. This may have been a moment to give up for many, but Kevin was determined to come back stronger. He was constantly challenging himself to be able to do more with his new way of life using his prosthetic. He quickly became known for telling people that “everyday is a blessing”.

His own time in the hospital led Kevin to volunteer at the VA hospital, but he never gave up his dream of visiting Alaska and decided to take on the title of assistant principal and athletic director in Galena, Alaska. He enjoyed every minute living out his dream of visiting Alaska, while also getting to fulfill his lifelong passion of helping kids and their families.

Kevin loved hunting, fishing, and anything that involved camouflage and the outdoors. His loyal dog, Bear, was always in tow. He had big plans for many hunting and fishing trips to come.

Kevin claimed the promise of his baptism on March 30th, 2021.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Schott, and his nephew, Matthew Schott.

He is survived by his wife, Teresa, his two children, Neelly and Hilliary, and his mother Velda. As well as his brother Kirk (Melissa), sister Karen (Steve), and sister Kandy. As well as sister in law Sonya and brother in law Jerry (Denise). Kevin is also survived by nieces, nephews, as well as the thousands of colleagues and students that he impacted throughout his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be sent to Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in honor of Kevin; 3133 F Road, Grand Junction, Co 81504. All memorial contributions will be used to help others in need the way that Kevin loved to do.

A celebration of Kevin’s life will be held at Grand Junction High School at 2:00 P.M. on June 19, 2021.
