Constance Wakefield

March 1, 1943 — July 25, 2020

Constance (Connie) Marion Wakefield, 77 passed away on July 25th, 2020 in Grand Junction, Colorado with loving family around her. Her children and siblings were all able to be with or near her at the time of her death.

Connie was born March 1st, 1943, in Sparta, Wisconsin to Elsie and Irvin Loff of Wilton, WI. She attended both Wilton and Tomah, WI high schools. She married Larry Wakefield and had five children; Matthew, Murray, Jeanne, Larry Jr. and Sherry. She and Larry lived in the Rockford, IL area for a number of years before moving to Grand Junction, CO. When asked why Grand Junction? Connie stated, “We liked the mountains but didn’t know anything about the US or where we might want to live. We looked at a map and randomly pointed to a spot in Colorado and said let’s move there.” This was simply a sign of her adventurous soul.

Connie, fondly referred to as “Granny”, moved to Grand Junction, CO in 1975 where she lived for a few years until she and Larry divorced. She moved to Darlington, WI where she raised her children, but Colorado kept calling and she returned in 1991, and remained here until the time of her death.

Connie loved the outdoors; hiking, camping, taking photos and her Bunco friends. She was an avid “rock hound” and a former member of the Grand Junction Gem & Mineral Club. She worked as a dental assistant for much of her working career.

Connie is survived by her sons Matthew (Jenann) Wakefield - Colorado, Murray (Tina Hall) Wakefield - Colorado; daughters Jeanne (Bill) Ubersox - Colorado and Sherry Riley - Wisconsin; grandchildren; Brookes Ubersox - Colorado and Krista (Nathan) Vanis - Colorado,  Vanessa Riley (Elizabeth Ward) - Nevada, Mitchell Riley (Kelsi Steffenhagen) and Michael Riley - Wisconsin; Shaylin and Sierra Wakefield - Colorado, great-grandchildren; Sox Hurr, Shylin Ward; siblings Carl (Nancy) Loff - Wisconsin, Carolyn (Spencer) Jensen - Wisconsin, Roselyn (Larry) Teutschmann - Wisconsin, Vera Seflow - Wisconsin, James (Brenda) Loff - Illinois, Marcia (Dean) Deick - Colorado.

Connie is preceded in death by her parents Irvin Loff 1980, Elsie Loff 2001; son Larry Jr. 1982.

Connie was never one to shy away from an adventure; whether it was simply a new hike in the desert (where she loved to look for rocks and see the cactus blooming) or the mountains to see the flowers and the vistas; or a big move across the country. On the eve of her death she told family, “Well, I guess I’m soon to be off on my next big adventure.”

Celebration of her life will be held at a later date. She’ll be laid to rest next to her son in Darlington, WI.
