Obituary

In Loving Memory of

Winifred “Winnie” Lee Hanson

August 2, 1935 – January 15, 2026

Winifred “Winnie” Lee Hanson passed away peacefully on January 15, 2026, at the age of 90. She was a devoted wife, beloved sister, mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and cherished friend whose warmth, generosity, and unwavering love touched everyone she met.

Born in Douglas, Arizona to Fred and Georgia Roberta (Franklin) Westervelt, Winnie grew up with a deep appreciation for family, community, and creativity. She graduated from Pomona High School in Pomona, California, and later in life proudly earned her Associate Degree in History, celebrated by her children who attended her graduation.

Winnie discovered her love of singing and acting in high school, where she met the love of her life, James “Val” Hanson. Val was into lighting and always had a spotlight on her. She performed with the Mother Players at Kingsley Elementary School in Pomona, California while her children were in grade school. She and Val became founding members of the Rialto Community Players, and Winnie shone in many roles—most memorably as the Mother Superior in The Sound of Music.

Winnie was very involved in her community and is a former Rialto City Council member and Mayor Pro Tem.

Winnie was also a current member of the Christian Science Society in Delta, Colorado, where she lovingly taught Sunday School. She was previously a church member in various Christian Science churches and societies in Southern California volunteering as reader, soloist, chaplain, usher and Reading Room Attendant. Her faith was reflected in her daily life through compassion, generosity and a sincere desire to help others.

Winnie will be remembered for her friendly, outgoing spirit and her steadfast dedication to her family. She taught the meaning of unconditional love and was always willing to help anyone in need.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Val. She is survived by her sister, Mary Jon Leonard of Apple Valley, California; daughter, Diawn Lee Beach (Kyle) of Clifton, Colorado; sons, James “Val” Hanson (Rhonda) of Bell Buckle, Tennessee and Jay “Vaughn” Hanson (Sharon) of Star, Idaho; nine grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Celebration of Life February 7, 2026 – 10:30 a.m. Downtown Vineyard Church 402 Grand Avenue Grand Junction, Colorado
