Thomas Darrell Sherman

Tom was born on August 9, 1935, at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, MT, the second of seven children to Arthur and Laura (Anderson) Sherman. He was raised on the family farm in Ballantine, MT, and attended Huntley Project School. A gifted student with a passion for mathematics and history, Tom even stepped in to teach his history class during his freshman year when the teacher was on maternity leave. His school gave nicknames to all students, and Tom’s was “Moose”. Moose was quoted in his senior yearbook that he wanted to own a jet plane and pursue civil engineering. He loved participating in sports and was chosen as the second-best athlete in his class, second only to his Uncle Don, his father’s youngest brother.

He graduated from Huntley Project High School in 1953 and served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1957, with assignments in Okinawa, Japan, and Seoul, South Korea. After his honorable discharge, Tom earned a degree in finance from Eastern Montana College (now Montana State University Billings) and began a successful career in banking.

Tom started with Commercial Credit in Billings, where he met his future wife, Joan Eastman. They married in April of 1961. His career took them to Butte, Montana, then to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where their first child, Michelle, was born, and eventually to Grand Junction, Colorado, where Tim and Jacque were born. He later worked for Mesa National Bank and concluded his career at United Bank. Tom later married Alberta Palmer, with whom he shared many happy years.

He looked forward to going home every year to spend time with his Montana family. Tom was a man of deep faith and a committed Catholic, attending daily Mass. A devoted father, Tom cherished time with his children and grandchildren and was a constant presence in their lives.

A passionate sports enthusiast, Tom was a devoted Denver Broncos fan and rarely missed a game. He found joy in hunting, fishing, golfing, and exploring Colorado’s outdoors. Even in his later years, he remained active, walking a mile each day. A loyal viewer of Jeopardy!, he watched every weekday.

Tom is survived by his children Michelle (Tony) Hughes, Timothy (Stephanie) Sherman, and Jacquelyn (Philip Pochop) Sherman; grandchildren Kristen (Chris Goodman) French, Casey Sherman, Ashleigh (Daniel) Peterson, Rachel (Andrew) Woolston, and Megan (Owen Taylor) Sherman; great-grandchildren Elizabeth Peterson, Max Peterson, and George Woolston; siblings Marilyn (Dennis) Espeland, Laurella Duncan, Kathleen Stevens, and Patrick (Susan) Sherman; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, and Alberta’s

extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Laura and Arthur Sherman, infant brother Michael Sherman, eldest brother Dale Sherman, and wife Alberta Sherman.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at 11:00 am. Reception to immediately follow at the St. Joseph’s Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grand Valley Catholic Outreach.
