Sheila Sue (Wheeler) Plsek was born in a Eugene, Oregon hospital north of the family’s home in Roseburg, Oregon on October 25, 1954. She was the third child of James and Nancy Wheeler. When she was 5½ years old, the family moved to Gold Hill, Oregon, and six years later to Colorado. She attended school in Fruita and Grand Junction, later Basalt, Colorado, and graduated from Craig, Colorado in 1972. Sheila worked as a construction laborer, an assistant manager in a large retail store, an accountant and graphic artist for a lumber company, and finally as a farmer/rancher. Her vegetable stand on 26½ Road in Grand Junction was well known for quality produce – especially corn on the cob.
Sheila met Anthony (Tony) Plsek in the mid-1980’s and both knew they had found their match. Tony and Sheila formally tied the knot on May 29, 1991 in the home of Sheila’s sister, Terry Owens, in Reno, Nevada. Together they worked the farm, raised cattle and hay, and loved to take their fifth wheel camper to their favorite fishing spots on Grand Mesa.
Throughout her life, Sheila was a multi-media, multi-talented artist. She loved to produce beautiful works of art in oils, ceramic clay, acrylics, and invented a unique process to convert gourds into amazing butterfly sculptures. She delighted in giving her art to others as gifts, and only in recent years found there was an eager market for her talents.
Sheila Sue Plsek was kind, giving, loyal, witty and imaginative. She possessed insight into animals and humans alike. Her gentle soul was a gift to all who knew her. She left us on April 11, 2026. Sheila was preceded in death by her parents, James and Nancy Wheeler, and brothers Timothy James Wheeler and James Patrick Wheeler. She is survived by sisters Melody Benfield, Teresa (Terry) Owens, Darlene Kemery and Laurel (Laurie) Timothy. A memorial service will be held at Brown’s Funeral Home in Grand Junction, Colorado on Thursday, May 21, 2026 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM. Donations in her name may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
