Robert Lloyd Schlagel

June 17, 1960 — April 24, 2025

Robert Lloyd Schlagel, aged 64, passed away on April 24, 2025 after a protracted struggle with multiple health issues. He was born on June 17, 1960, at Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, Colorado, to Kenneth Lloyd Schlagel and Carolyn Emily Mann. Bob graduated from East High School in Denver, Colorado, where he played football and basketball and earned the Pat Panek award for top football player in 1978. Bob attended Colorado Mesa University, formerly Mesa State College, where he was recognized as an All-American defensive lineman before breaking his back his junior year which forced him to retire from football.

Post college, Bob was a Mortgage Broker and a talented musician. He delighted many with his warm voice and acoustic guitar, playing for decades in clubs throughout the state. Bob formed a duo with his college friend Larry McKenna “Bubba”, where they performed as “Bob & Bubba” as they gained popularity in the late 80’s and 90’s. Bob & Bubba would eventually serve as the “warm up act” for a concert featuring America, Pure Prairie League and Kenny Loggins, and even toured Japan with the USO in 1987.

Bob maintained close connections with his Mesa State football team and was instrumental in forming Mavs 4 Life to assist Mesa Mavericks in need.

Bob loved family, sports, music, fishing, and his dogs. His dogs were his family and provided comfort during his illness. He wrote songs for Bo and Tibo and had Seabiscuit and Roxy by his side at home when he could no longer care for himself.

Bob was friendly and outgoing, and could easily connect with anyone from any background, with his captivating smile. He loved making people laugh and was devoted to his family's achievements. Known for instigating memorable stories, Bob left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Bob experienced multiple long-lasting relationships throughout his life, during which he composed beautiful love songs inspired by the remarkable women he encountered. Later in life, Bob entered marriage and resided with his wife Sandy for two years in Des Moines, Iowa.

Bob is survived by his sister, Sue Ann Counterman (Brian), and his brother, Bruce Schlagel (Ginnie), as well as his nieces and nephews: Kenny (Kerri), Micky (Ashley), Shelby and their children, along with Ryan and Holly. Bob considered their pets part of the extended family and appreciated receiving updates about them.

Memorial services are still pending for a TBD date in May. St. Philip Lutheran Church 7531 S. Kendall Blvd. Littleton, CO 80128
