Robert Newberry

February 16, 1936 — November 15, 2022

Robert James Newberry (Bob) was born February 16, 1936 in Portales, New Mexico to Roy and Maude Newberry. He passed peacefully at his home in Grand Junction, CO on November 15, 2022 with family around him.

Robert grew up in Portales on the family farm with his two brothers and nine sisters. He was in the middle of the pack.

After graduating from high school he moved to Colorado and lived with his sister and her family. While living with his sister he got a job at the Climax Mine. This is where he met the love of his life, Marilee Newberry. They were married on October 23, 1956, in Leadville, CO. They had Debra Lee Newberry in Denver, CO while they lived in Climax. They moved to Gas Hills, WY and had Robert Anthony Newberry and Randy Edward Newberry in Riverton, WY.  They moved to Idaho Spring, CO where they resided for several years. While they lived in Idaho Springs, Bob enjoyed coaching and cheering his children on while they participated in football, baseball, basketball and musical events. He was also a member of the Elks lodge where he helped with the hoop shoot program for years.

Robert’s job at the Climax Mine was just the beginning of his mining career. He also worked at the Lucky Mac Mine in Wyoming, the Urad Mine, and the Henderson Mine and Mill. He held various positions but his favorite was the Tailings and Transportation crew at Henderson Mill.

He started his own business, doing construction in Grand County, after he left the mining industry.

They built their dream home on Ute Pass (Parshall, CO), not far from the mill site, with the help from family and many friends. They lived there over 35 years. Due to health reasons, in 2016 they moved to Grand Junction, to a beautiful home they enjoyed.

He was a man with unlimited talents. No matter where they lived he reached out to their neighbors to offer help and advice, with a story and a smile. Needless to say he had many friends.

He enjoyed many sports, gardening, working on cars and cheering on the Broncos.  Like his wife, Marilee, his BIGGEST LOVE was watching and following his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in whatever activity they were participating in, nieces and nephews too. You hardly saw Bob without his camera, always looking for that “Kodak Moment”.

Robert was preceded in death by: his parents (Roy and Maude), his wife (Marilee), his son (Tony), eight of his sisters and many special relatives.

Robert is survived by: his daughter, Debra Manuel (Stan), son, Randy Newberry (Toni), daughter in law, Jeanne Newberry (Tony), brothers, Herb (Caroline) and Gale (Janelle), sister, Mary Morgan, 7 grandchildren; Tom (Renae), Jeff (Kyle), Beth (Aaron), Ryan, Samantha (Brandon), Brittany (Kevin), Michaela (Ben) and 10 great grandchildren; Ashlyn, Coleman, Rocco, Aiden, Hunter, Gianna, Hagen, Aubrey, Gabriel and Leo.

There are no ceremony plans at this time.
