Obituary

Richard Robert Rieger, a devoted servant, faithful friend, loving husband, father and grandfather, passed away on August 31, 2026, at the age of 76. Born on Flag Day June 14, 1950, in Summit County, New Jersey to his loving parents John Rieger and Eileen Ford Rieger. Rick lived a life defined by faith, service, quick wit, and deep dedication to his community.

A proud veteran, Rick served as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force from 1969 to 1973. Stationed in Germany, he supported operations during the Vietnam War by going to Vietnam and repairing sheet metal on aircrafts a few times.

Upon returning home, Rick earned a BA and Master’s Degree in Special Education from UNC Greely and dedicated more than three decades to shaping young minds. He taught TMR in Canon City from 1978 to 1984, later serving as a Resource Teacher at Orchard Mesa Middle School (1984–2005) and Grand Mesa Middle School (2005–2008).

A faithful servant to his Lord, Rick brought his passion for teaching to his ministry. For more than 20 years Rick was on the usher and elder (wiseguys) team for the vineyard church. Starting in 1980, he led Bible study three times a week and remained actively involved in men's ministry groups, marriage ministries, prison outreach, and hosting at-home fellowships as well as a trip to Uganda and South Sudan to support local pastors. His devotion, knowledge of scripture and love of travel also led him to serve as an Israel tour guide for his church on four separate occasions. Two of the journey's including Petra in Jordan. Starting in 1989 Debroah and Rick hosted foreign students in their home until 2010.

Beyond his teaching and ministry, Rick was known for his infectious sense of humor, a trait fondly remembered by his friends, and one his beloved wife, Deborah, credits as a secret behind their 48 wonderful years together. When he wasn't serving others, Rick embraced adventure through hiking, biking, going on cruises, and enjoying new countries.

Rick is survived by his beloved wife, Deborah; his children, Ashley Nellums (Son in law Robert) and John Rieger; and his granddaughter, Tearza Nellums. He is also survived by his brother Bill Rieger (sister in law Barbra) and sister Jean. His legacy of faith, laughter, kindness, and service lives on in his family members, friends, students, and church community members whose lives he touched.

Rick is proceeded in death by his parents and his older artist brother Jackie Rieger.
