Nancy Jean Hoefer

March 20, 1940 — September 11, 2023

Nancy Jean (Wood) Hoefer, age 83, passed away on September 11, 2023 surrounded by her children. She was the oldest of three children born to Ludwig and June Wood in Cleveland, Ohio. After taking a family camping trip to the Rockies as a young girl, Nancy longed to live in the West.  She attended Colorado State University where she met her husband, David, in the Hikers Club. They were married in Cincinnati, OH on June 25, 1960 and moved to Durango, CO where David started his career with the Forest Service.

They became a family of five and lived in many beautiful communities including Aspen and Steamboat Springs, CO, Hailey, ID and Ogden, UT before retiring in Grand Junction, CO.  As a warm and giving person, Nancy easily made many friends. She was an enthusiastic leader in her career as Activities Director for seniors and as a Girl Scout Leader for 35 years. She was an excellent mom to three kids and many cats and dogs.

Nancy and David took adventurous camping trips in their truck camper, traveling back roads from Alaska to Cabo San Lucas, MX. They even rowed a 12 foot rowboat throughout Lake Powell. She enjoyed collecting Southwestern and Indigenous art on her travels. Nancy’s talents included gourmet cooking, sewing, poetry, and gardening. An avid fan of Jeopardy, Nancy was smarter than most contestants. Her immense creativity was often displayed in the beautiful banners she created at the First Congregational Church where she was an active member.

Nancy is survived by her husband, David, children Stephen Hoefer (Deb), Laura Conant (Bill Cort) and Kristen Seiff of Grand Junction and grandchildren Rachel Seiff, Abbey Hoefer and Ben Hoefer.

A memorial service will be held on September 30, 2023 at the First Congregational Church, 1425 N 5th St. Grand Junction, Colorado 81501 at 10:00 A.M., reception following the service.
