Mary Pearl Huston

November 30, 2023

Mary Pearl Huston, age 90, passed away peacefully on November 30, 2023 at the Beehive Assisted Living Facility in Grand Junction, Colorado. Mary was born during the depression on October 25, 1933 in a tent on the Mississippi River in Monroe County, Illinois. Her parents were Alfred and Alberta (Wanick) McCarty.

Mary’s earliest memories were of living in Lenado, Colorado. As she aged, she would reflect fondly on those days telling stories and remembering a simpler time. After her father died, the young family moved to Missouri. Mary’s childhood was loving but meager as one might expect being raised during the depression in a single parent home. That experience made her a very resourceful and practical person; someone you could always rely on.

Mary graduated from Buchanan High School in Troy Missouri. Shortly thereafter she wed the love of her life, Grover “Jerry” Huston. They began their married life in Troy, Missouri but eventually moved to Cedaredge, Colorado where they happily raised three daughters and two sons. Mary worked for the Delta County Extension Service for many years before retiring. She loved her job and the people she worked with. She was a fixture at the Delta County Fair each year manning their booth and helping where needed.

Mary was a beautiful woman who loved to travel, get immersed in genealogy research, and enjoyed all aspects of her ever-growing family. She supported her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in all their life events and accomplishments. She was a solid force in all their lives ~ often stubborn, but always present and dependable. Her home was always open to family and friends where so many happy memories were created.

Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son Samuel “Sparky” Huston, her brothers James McCarty and William McCarty, and her sisters Carol (McCarty) Andrews and Virginia (Lavy) Scott.

She is survived by her sister Margie (Lavy) Porter, her children Gail Hill, Sharon Brooks, Pamela Gauthier and Michael Huston, and 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Both Mary and Jerry’s ashes will be buried in the Cedaredge Cemetery next to their son, Sparky. A graveyard service will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in her honor to Hope West Hospice Care in Grand Junction (hopewestco.org).

In closing, we’d like to thank all the family and friends that joined us a very short time ago to celebrate her 90th birthday. She had such a great day and having you all there meant the world to her. We will miss her forever. Rest in peace, Mary Pearl ~ we love you!
