Lloyd Alan (Al) Edwards, age 85, slipped the surly bonds of Earth for the final time on Wednesday, July 30, 2025 during an afternoon nap at his home in Whitewater, Colorado.
Born December 21, 1939 in Jerome, Arizona, he was was the son of Lloyd and Elizabeth Edwards. Al grew up in Prescott, Arizona, graduating from Prescott High School and subsequently attended Arizona State University on an Air Force ROTC scholarship, earning a BS degree in aeronautical engineering. He served in the US Air Force for 20 years before retiring as a Major in 1982. During his military tenure, and afterwards as a defense contractor, Al danced the skies on laughter silvered wings in 31 types of aircraft to determine their performance limitations, and helped design several military aircraft, most notably the F-15A Eagle and F-117 Nighthawk.
However, Al’s most notable accomplishment in the military was meeting and marrying Judy Mercier in Moses Lake, Washington in 1964. They were married for 61 years, and raised two children together. Following his retirement from the aeronautical world, Al served as the behind-the-scenes administrative support for Judy’s flourishing real estate business.
Al’s hobbies included watching baseball, fishing, cooking amazing meals, baking hearty bread, and presenting his 1957 Chevy Bel Air at local classic car shows. Most days would find him in his wood shop crafting cherished creations out of exotic woods. During his lifetime, Al designed and build 5 houses, each unique and artistically fitted to its site.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Elizabeth Edwards, and his sister, Jeanne Ahern.
Al is survived by his wife Judy Edwards; son William (Dana) Edwards, Whitewater, CO; daughter Laura Mercier, Grand Junction, CO; and grandchildren Duncan Edwards, Boulder CO; Jackson Edwards, USAFA, CO; Allison (Chris) Burwell Haynes, Seattle, WA; and Caraline Burwell, Whitewater, CO.
Memorial Services will be on Friday August 22, 2025 at 10:00 am at the Western Colorado Veterans Cemetery in Grand Junction, CO.
