Kathryn Lee “Kay” Wood, 91, of Grand Junction, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2025 at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Kay was born March 3, 1933 at Lawn Hill, Iowa to Fonzy and Lula (Reece) Winters. On October 7, 1955 Kay married Kenneth Albert Wood at Marshalltown, IA. She was proud to be mother to their four children.
Kay was active in and a member of the Canyon View Vineyard Church and New Horizons Foursquare Church.
After graduating from high school, Kay attended the Evangelical Deaconess Hospital – a diploma school in Marshalltown, IA where she earned her certificate in nursing. After graduating she worked at the University Hospital as a scrub nurse in surgery. She then worked with children with disabilities at the University School. Upon moving to Grand Junction, CO, she found a nursing job at the VA Hospital caring for Veterans. Being a nurse and helping others was her passion and she enjoyed it immensely.
She loved people and delighted in getting to know them and their families. It was said she never met a stranger. She enjoyed reaching out to family and friends through her card ministry sending a variety of cards each month to those she knew and loved. She touched many people.
Kay is survived by her children; Jim (Vesna) Wood, Peyton, CO, William (Tereska) Wood, Chandler, AZ, Susan (Darrell) York, Orlando, FL, and David Wood. Her grandchildren James Wood II, Rachel York (Jeffrey Sander), Carmen (Chris) Duke. Great-grandson Tristan Duke. Brother Lawrence Winters of Iowa.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband Ken; her parents; step-mother Mary Etta Winters; brothers Floyd, Kenneth, Wallace, Lester, Merle, Millard, Willard, Stanley, Donald; and sisters Hazel, Norma, Fern, and Jeanette.
A celebration of life will be held on Thursday, January 9, 2025 at 1:00 pm at New Horizons Foursquare Church at 641 Horizon Drive, Grand Junction, CO 81506. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mercy Ships.
