Jessica May Poteet, long time resident of the Grand Valley, passed away in her home on Thursday September 15th, 2022 at the age of 37 following a long and hard-fought battle with multiple illnesses.
Jessica is survived by her son, Xander Poteet; her grandmother, Darla Poteet; her significant other, Jeff Tipton; her brother, Pedro Poteet; and several cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is predeceased by her mother, Paula Poteet; her brother, Phillip Cortez-Poteet; and her grandfather, “Bill” Poteet.
Born in East Los Angeles, California on October 10th, 1984, Jessica and her brothers moved to Colorado when she was 1 ½ years old, where they were raised by their grandmother. From a very young age, Jessica demonstrated a passion and talent for singing. Constantly active in school plays and musicals, Jessica also sang the National Anthem before sporting events at Central High School. Jessica had a special gift when it came to plants and animals. Her green thumb was on display in her gardens where she grew a wide variety of beautiful flowers, with emphasis on Dahlias, which were her favorite. Jessica could be found befriending all manner of animals, whom all just seemed to naturally gravitate towards her kind and gentle nature.
Ever the patriot, she stood for the National Anthem, and always spoke from her heart. Jessica was an amazing cook, something she enjoyed and took great pride in. She loved lifting others up and making people smile. A dedicated mother, there was nothing she wouldn’t do for her son, who was unquestionably her pride and joy. She treated others with dignity and respect, and was the definition of humble. As a volunteer with Special Olympics Colorado, Jessica shined brightly when she brought her energy and enthusiasm to events. Actively involved whenever possible and always the first to lend a hand, she made a meaningful impact on every athlete, coach, and volunteer she encountered.
In lieu of flowers, her family is asking that people volunteer with Special Olympics Colorado, or donate to the organization in memory of Jessica at the below links.
