Obituary

Francis Glenn Katzenberger, 73, of Glade Park, Colorado, passed away unexpectedly on September 6, 2026, following a sudden illness.

Born on May 27, 1953, in Freeport, Illinois, to the late Martin Glenn and Cordella Marie (Peters) Katzenberger, Francis grew up grounded in strong family values and faith. In his youth, he served as an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Lena, Illinois. He later moved to Colorado with his family, graduating from Central High School in Grand Junction as a proud member of the Class of 1971.

Francis was a man of extraordinary work ethic and a true jack-of-all-trades who poured his heart into everything he did. Over the years, he worked as a oil and gas rig hand, cabinet maker, mechanic, lumber yard driver, warehouse worker, flatbed truck driver and owner/operator of Sal's Pizza & Pub before spending 14 years behind the wheel as a cherished school bus driver. He was also a faithful member of The Cowboy At The Cross Church in Austin, Colorado.

To know Francis was to love him. Outgoing, quick-witted, and genuinely kind, he was someone who truly never met a stranger and could brighten anyone's day. Above all, he was a deeply devoted family man. He was happiest outdoors—whether he was out fishing, tinkering with woodwork or small engines, gardening or working on projects around the house. But his favorite pastime was spending time with family!

Francis had a soft spot for children, and alongside his beloved wife of 40 years, Karen, he spent over two decades opening his home and heart to foster children across the Grand Valley, becoming a second father and lifelong champion to many.

Francis was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Cordella Katzenberger.

He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter in his wife, Karen (Winters) Katzenberger of Glade Park, CO; his children, Ryan Katzenberger and Shawna Allen of Grand Junction, CO, Matthew (Sherissa) Katzenberger of Mack, CO, Cutler Katzenberger of Glade Park, CO, Aries Katzenberger of Glade Park, CO, and Tamara Katzenberger of Grand Junction, CO; his sister, Elizabeth (Bud) Pease; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; along with many dear nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

Honoring Francis’s wishes, his family will gather at his favorite outdoor spot at a later date to honor his life, share stories, and celebrate the incredible man he was.

In lieu of flowers, the family humbly requests that contributions to assist with medical and final expenses be sent to: Karen Katzenberger, c/o Ryan Katzenberger 2938 Trinity Peaks Way Grand Junction, CO 81504
