Obituary

Eugene Leonard “Skip” McMurray II, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, just days before his 82nd birthday.

Skip was born on June 19, 1944, in San Francisco, California. As a young child, his family relocated to Fort Worth, Texas, where he spent his early years. In 1991, Skip made Rifle, Colorado, his home, where he became a familiar face throughout the community. A proud veteran, Skip served in the United States Army despite his father’s wishes that he join the Navy, (he was an admiral). During his military service, he worked aboard medical evacuation helicopters, helping rescue wounded soldiers. He often spoke with great pride about his service and the lives he helped save.

After settling in Rifle, Skip became known for his outgoing personality and friendly nature. Whether you found him around town, at the local tavern, or enjoying conversation with friends, he never met a stranger. He genuinely enjoyed visiting with people and was always ready to share a story and a laugh. Skip worked at the local pawn shop over the years and generously volunteered at the Moose Lodge until just a few months before his passing.

Above all else, Skip had a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs, Daisy and Chubbs, who brought him endless companionship and joy.

Skip lived the last 18 years where he resided at Rifle housing authority which he was truly grateful for. Skip, accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, bringing comfort and peace to both him and those who loved him.

Skip was preceded in death by his daughter, Karen McMurray; his parents, Eugene and Mary; and his sister Patti. He is survived by his son, Joshua McMurray; his grandson Ronnie McMurray; his granddaughter Courtney Brumbalow, and his six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service celebrating Skip’s life will be held Saturday, September 12th, 11am at the Rifle Moose Lodge. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Rifle Moose Lodge 1345 or the Rifle Animal Shelter in honor of Skip’s lifelong love of animals.

Skip will be remembered for his service to his country, his warm smile, his gift for conversation, his willingness to help others, and the friendships he built throughout his life. His presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
