Dell Johnson was born in Madera, California, and grew up in Lemoore, California, where she met and married Bill Johnson. Together, the Navy took them on many adventures, living in Virginia Beach, VA, San Diego, CA, Alameda, CA, and Bremerton, WA. In 1983, Dell moved to Rifle, Colorado, where she resided until retirement. Afterward, she enjoyed traveling and spending time in Newport News, VA, and Gardnerville/Reno, NV, before returning to Grand Junction, Colorado late last year, where she lived until her passing.
Dell is survived by her brother Robert Hunter; sisters Peggy and Netti Hunter; sons Tim Johnson, Mike Johnson, DJ Locklear, and Liam Boateng; as well as many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom were her pride and joy.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Lucile Hunter; brother Calvin Hunter; daughter Paula Johnson; nephews Earl and Conway Hunter; and grandson Michael Johnson.
Dell served as a civilian for the U.S. Navy and later worked for the U.S. Forest Service until her retirement. She was also active in her community, owning and operating a family-style restaurant in Rifle, JQS. Dell enjoyed hosting and cooking for many who traveled near and far during hunting seasons. Even after retirement, she continued to work fires and never lost her love of adventure. Her favorite way to travel was by cruise ship.
Family was the heart of Dell’s life. She treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, and many dear friends near and far. Dell was known for her kindness, compassion, and willingness to be of service. She loved to cook, and those who knew her knew that she loved through her craft. At any gathering, she could always be found in the kitchen, creating meals and memories.
Services for Dell will be held at Rifle Falls State Park in Rifle, Colorado, on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. Family and friends are invited to join in a celebration of her life, which will include a butterfly release in her honor.
