Doreen Margaret Burger, 85, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2026, with her family by her side.

She was born Doreen Margaret Kidd on May 16, 1940, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, to James and Evelyn Kidd. In the mid-1960s, she married Petrus Marinus Schimek and immigrated to the United States, where she made her home for the remainder of her life. In August 2006, Doreen moved to Colorado, where she resided until her passing.

Doreen enjoyed knitting, working on puzzles, and shopping. Professionally, she worked for many years as a bookkeeper for dental offices and hotels before becoming a hotel manager; she eventually retired from the Beau Rivage Motel in Old Orchard Beach, Maine. After moving to Colorado, Doreen became a longtime volunteer at Community Hospital, generously giving her time in service to others. In recent years, her primary focus and joy was knitting hats for newborns in the Labor and Delivery unit.

Doreen was preceded in death by her sister, Marilyn Lucas, of Canada.

She is survived by her beloved son, Peter Schimek, and daughter-in-law, Wendy Schimek, of Fruita, Colorado; her two grandchildren, Kyle and Taylor Schimek, of Grand Junction; her sister, Joan Kidd; and nephews Eric Franc and Marc Quevillon, all of Quebec, Canada.

In lieu of a service, donations may be made in Doreen’s name to the Community Hospital Labor & Delivery Unit.
