Charley Andrew Bintliff was born on May 30, 1931, in Miltown, South Dakota. He graduated from Parkston High School and went on to complete one year of college before beginning his career as a schoolteacher. It was during this time that he met Bernadine, who would become his lifelong partner and the love of his life.
At the age of 22, after a year and a half of teaching, Charley enlisted in the Air Force, where he gained specialized knowledge in electronics training that would later become foundational to his career. He and Bernadine were married in June of that same year. During their service, they were stationed in England, where they welcomed their first child, Debbie.
After returning to the United States, Charley began a long and successful career with IBM, applying the skills he developed in the Air Force. His work took his family across the country. They first lived in New York, where their son Gary was born, then moved to Michigan, where Paula and Mark were born, and later to Montana, where their daughter Nancy joined the family. In Montana, Charley developed a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing.
The family later returned briefly to New York before settling in Longmont, Colorado. There, Charley played an instrumental role in establishing a boys' baseball organization. He spent many years coaching, finding great joy in helping young athletes develop their skills and confidence. While in Longmont, he was also part of the Reynolds Family Singers, a gospel group in which he played the bass guitar and piano and shared his voice in song. In his free time, he enjoyed bowling, golfing, hunting, and fishing. Their years in Colorado were rich with community, family, and faith.
Charley's work with IBM eventually took him to Tucson, Arizona. He retired in 1989 and moved to Grand Junction, Colorado, to be closer to family. Retirement was filled with the things he loved most, especially golf. Charley and Bernadine traveled extensively, attending their grandchildren's events, visiting loved ones, and returning to places that held special memories.
His passion for golf extended beyond playing; he also crafted golf clubs for himself and others, a hobby that brought him both purpose and joy.
Charley lived a full and meaningful life, marked by devotion to his family, a strong work ethic, and a love for community, faith, music, and the outdoors. He will be remembered for his steady presence, generous spirit, and the deep love he had for his family and the life they built together.
Services will be Thursday, May 21 with the viewing starting at 9:30 a.m. followed by the funeral service at 11:30 at Browns Cremation and Funeral Service, 904 N. 7th Street, Grand Junction, Colorado
