April 30, 1937 – July 23, 2025

Charles Arthur Kammer, age 88, passed away peacefully in his home at Grand Junction, Colorado, on July 23, 2025. Born on April 30, 1937, in Marine City, Michigan, Charles was the beloved son of Mary Kathryn Densmore and Arthur “Art” William Kammer. He was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and his devoted wife of 59 years, Judy (Horton) Kammer.

A man of deep and awe-inspiring faith, Charles’s life was a quiet testament to humility, service, and devotion. Guided by his relationship with his Heavenly Father, he embraced every opportunity to serve others with selflessness and grace, setting a powerful example of Christ-like love. Through his example and commitment to the Gospel, he helped establish a branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Marine City, Michigan, with just two families, a humble beginning that, under his faithful leadership and inspired service, grew into a thriving ward in St Clair, Michigan, which continues to grow to this day. The ripple effect of his devotion, both seen and unseen, continues to bless generations of individuals and families whose lives have been touched by his quiet courage and enduring faith.

“Well done, thou good and faithful servant.”

— Matthew 25:21

A skilled mechanic by trade, Charles found peace and spiritual renewal in nature, often working outdoors and feeling deeply connected to God’s creations. He loved the Lord, his family, and his country with all his heart, and lived each day with purpose, kindness, and unwavering strength.

Private First Class Charles Kammer proudly served his country as a paratrooper on active duty in the United States Army from July 20, 1954, to July 19, 1957. Following his active service, he continued to serve in the Army Reserve until July 19, 1962. After completing Basic Combat Training, he underwent Battle Indoctrination and Code of Conduct instruction, preparing him for the demanding challenges of both airborne and ground combat operations. He went on to graduate from Basic Airborne training at Fort Benning, Georgia, earning the coveted Parachutist Badge.

He was first assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where he exemplified the discipline, skill, and courage expected of America’s elite airborne troops. In 1956, he deployed to West Germany with the 11th Airborne Division, serving with unwavering dedication and honor.

When tragedy struck and his only brother was lost in a paratrooper training accident, Private Kammer was reassigned to a stateside post, honoring the Army’s recognition of his role as the sole surviving son. In both his service and his sacrifice, he demonstrated the highest values of duty, family, and love of country.

In recognition of his honorable service during a time of national defense, Private Kammer was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, a decoration presented to members of the U.S. Armed Forces who served honorably during designated periods of national emergency.

After completing his military service, Charles returned to Michigan, where he met the love of his life, Judy. He proposed just two weeks after they met, and together they built a beautiful life centered on faith, family, and love. They raised five children, who survive him: Tonda Garringer, Torie (Lane) Waite, Charles (Carla) Kammer, Tracy (David) Daniels, and Tennille (Nathan) Sawyer.

Charles was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His legacy lives on through his 22 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, with two more on the way. His wisdom, gentle humor, and steadfast presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

His life was a testament to service through his military commitment, his dedication to his family, and his active involvement in his church community. Charles loved the Lord, his family, and his country with all his heart.
