Obituary

Britt Mathwich, husband, father, and grandfather, passed quietly with his family at his side on April 23, 2026, at the age of 71.

Britt was born in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1954 to Harold and Vera Mathwich. Shortly after his birth, the family returned to New Mexico, where Britt was raised and attended school in Clovis, graduating from Clovis High School with the Class of 1972.

He went on to attend Texas Lutheran College and Eastern New Mexico University, where he played football at both institutions. He later completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology at the University of New Mexico and returned to Eastern New Mexico University to earn a master’s degree in organizational communication.

Britt found his professional calling in the hospitality industry. He and Mary began managing a busy 24-hour truck stop in Merrill, Wisconsin. He and Mary moved on to open and operate their own restaurant, Britt’s 4-Tables Restaurant in Portales, New Mexico. After eight years in Portales, Britt and Mary joined Great Inns of the Rockies Corporation. Over the next three decades, he steadily advanced within the company, ultimately serving as President and CEO, overseeing properties in Cloudcroft, New Mexico, and Midway, Utah.

Following the sale of the company in 2013, Britt and Mary retired and relocated with their family to Grand Junction, Colorado. There, he joined the business department at Colorado Mesa University as an Associate Professor at the Davis School of Business, in Hospitality Management. He fully retired in the summer of 2024.

Britt married Mary Ramsey in 1975, and together they built a life centered on work and family. They had one daughter, Julie Mathwich, who married William Campbell and later blessed them with two grandchildren, Tyme William Britt and Sunshine Mary Jane Campbell.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; his daughter, Julie; and his two grandchildren, Tyme and Sunshine, all of Grand Junction, Colorado brother Brian of Santa Fe NM and sister Amy of Duncan OK.

Britt deeply loved and was devoted to his family and considered his greatest accomplishment to be protecting and providing for them. He loved to travel, work in the yard and watch business news. He will be remembered for his calm demeanor, patience, and tolerance, as well as for the long “to-do” lists he was known for assigning to those around him.
